Thank you once again for taking time to read through this article, it is my prayer that as you read, the eyes of your understanding be enlightened.
So in the last article, we considered The Man Christ Jesus: The Express Image. Today, we consider Christ Jesus as being the message the Church has been asked to preach and teach. We take a cue from the Apostles, in their epistles and the book of Acts.
“To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus” (Col. 1: 27 – 28)
Notice the bolded text whom we preach, that’s the message. It is Christ we preach. Whom! Not it! We don’t preach riches, fame or business empowerment or change of levels, we preach Christ! We show Him to the world and expound Him to the Church.
The Apostles were very particular about this one message, that everywhere they went, that was the only message preached. Christ and His redemptive work! Paul speaking to the Corinthian Church said:
“And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with Excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (1 Cor. 2: 1 – 2)
It was just that message, Christ! Paul had only one message, The Man Christ Jesus. Wouldn’t it have been beautiful to be in the Churches where Paul preached? And to listen as he unravelled Christ to us?
Paul speaking further said:
“But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness” (1 Cor. 1:23)
We preach Christ! That’s the message. That was the message, today that is the message and that will be the message. Of course we will get better in the communication of our faith as we grow and the scriptures are opened to us more and more by the Holy Spirit, but the message never changes. It will still be Christ Jesus.
Look at Peter’s message in Acts 2 and Acts 4, Philip’s message to the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8 and everywhere they had the opportunity to speak, their message was simple, Christ Jesus! who He is and what He did! That’s our message.
See Philip’s message here:
“But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women” (Acts 8:12)
Paul and Silas also:
“And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house” (Acts 16:31)
Scripture also says this:
“And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; to wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God” (2 Cor. 5:20)
We are ambassadors for Christ! Christ Jesus. We speak for Him! We preach Christ Jesus! We don’t preach any other thing. That’s the one message the Church (You and Me) has been given.
The Message of the scriptures both in the old and new testaments was about one man, Christ. Though the old presented Him in shadows and types, while the new expressly described Him. And that is the same message, we have been asked to preach. The message is Christ Jesus. Jesus after His death said this:
“Then Jesus said to them, “O foolish men, and slow of heart to trust and believe in everything that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and [only then to] enter His glory? Then beginning with Moses and [throughout] all the [writings of the] prophets, He explained and interpreted for them the things referring to Himself [found] in all the Scriptures” [Luke 24: 24 – 27 AMP]
In the scenario above, He explained Himself out of the writings of Moses and the Prophets because they were all about Him. Here also He says, the scriptures testify of Me. I am the message in the scriptures and in Me is eternal life.
“You search and keep on searching and examining the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and yet it is those [very Scriptures] that testify about me;” [John 5:39]
“And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone;” (Eph. 2:20)
We are being built on the foundation of the apostles, we preach Christ only.
