Study in the Spirit
(Why and How we Should Study)

Some like to read their Bible in the Hebrew; some like to read it in the Greek; I like to read it in the Holy Ghost. – Smith Wigglesworth.

Growth is essential for every Christian, if you are not growing then you’re dying, one cannot remain at the same point, it’s either you’re moving forward or you’re moving backward. Someone once said, if you remain, at the same point in the spirit for too long, then you’ve backslidden. In- short, every day we must journey further in the Spirit.

As believers we should seek to know more about God per time, God is inexhaustible, so there is enough of Him to learn. The more we know him, the more we discover we don’t know him and the more we need to know him. Studying of the word, is not a one-off thing, it’s a continual responsibility, we must constantly study Gods word and meditate on it day and night, we must write it in the tablets of our heart, we must devote time to study, for where our treasure is, there would our heart be also. The Bible clearly stated the need for continuous study:

In other to grow spiritually we must STUDY God’s word.

“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” – 2 Timothy 2:15

For us to continually be like Jesus Christ, for us to conform to His will and live a life that’s pleasing unto him, it is essential that we know the yearning of God, and the way to know this is to study the scriptures.

As much as it is important that we study the scriptures, it is also important HOW we study and WHY we study. A lot of time we study the bible for the wrong reasons, some study for the sake of argument, some study to be able to teach and “show” that they’re knowledgeable about Gods word. Also, it is important to note that no matter HOW we study the word if it’s not done in the spirit it is done in futility.

Why:
We study to know the counsel of God concerning our lives, his promises, how to live a glorious life, a life of Love and Holiness, a life where we are able to overcome sin by the grace of God by following the leading of the Spirit. We study to know about His personality and His principles.

But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night – Psalm 1:2
I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways – Psalm 119:15
Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word. – Psalm 119:148
But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word – Act 6:4

As believers we should continually desire to know the intent of God, tarry in the place of fellowship, commune with the Holy Spirit and allow Gods word find full expression in our lives by our action.

How:
Your study of the word is not determined by how big your bible is, the amount of concordance, translations, English and Greek manuscript that you have, rather its dependent on you being taught by the Spirit. Our study of the word must be done in total accordance to the Spirit, we must let the Holy Ghost teach us per time, this is essential because….

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness…” 2 Timothy 3:16 – 17

There is no better teacher to teach us than God himself. The Scriptures was wrapped and Packaged by the Spirit and it will take only the Spirit to un-ravel the mystery of the scriptures.

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. – John 14:16

The Holy Spirit is our teacher, He is the only teacher of the scriptures, and He teaches us all things. As Christians we should be totally dependent on the Spirit so that He may teach us.

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2Cor. 3:18

Only He, the Holy-spirit can open our eyes to understand the Scriptures.

“And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?” Acts 8:30
“And he said, how can I, except some man should guide me…” Acts 8:31
“Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures” Luke 24:45

Jesus’s journey with the 2 disciples on the way to Emmaus is typical of How to study in the spirit. Studying in the Spirit is actually a journey with the spirit through the scriptures. It is not adding the words of the scriptures, or joining phrases together to please our own already defined definition of things. We are not supposed to read our-selves into the scriptures, but to wait for the scriptures to speak to us. Studying the Spirit will open our eyes to see that the Bible right from first chapter of Genesis up until the last chapter of Revelation talks all about Jesus. Jesus is the center of the Bible.

“And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself” Luke 24:27

Until the Church starts to study the Bible in Spirit our definition of life and Christianity will never agree with God’s mind. One key thing, to note is that, it takes quietness and Humility to be taught. No wonder why Jesus would always make the people SIT before He starts to feed them (Luke 9:14 – 17). Just as the students must sit before the teacher comes to teach them. The Position of sitting is the position of accepting that we don’t know and we agree to be taught what we don’t know.

So also must we take this Position in our hearts so we may allow the spirit teach us.

“The entrance of your world giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the SIMPLE” Psalm 119:130

The more we study the word in the Spirit the more we are changed to the image of the son, so that as he is, so shall will be; for we shall see him as he is. (I John 3:2). We see Him as he really His, when we study in the spirit. As you continue daily in the study of the word remember that “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God”. The Word is Spirit, and can only be understood by Spirit-Men, by Spirit-Men I mean Men who are led (taught, directed) by the spirit.

LET JESUS (THE WORD HIMSELF) BE AT THE CENTER OF ALL THAT YOU DO. I CALL YOU BLESSED!
